FIREHOUSE

"The only title in our democracy superior to that of President is the title of citizen.”

(Loius Brandeis)

Firehouse tells the story of three courageous firefighters on night shift, stationed somewhere in the inner city of Joburg. It has been described as “a crafty piece of work”, “transformative” and “ahead of its time”. The story shows the close bond formed between the characters of Brains, Jacob and Mamabolo who run towards danger when everyone else is running away from it. Aware of the inherent dangers of the job, they are willing to risk it all to save the lives of others whilst serving the city and its people. The play is set against the backdrop of an Emergency Services in crisis- almost beyond repair and a country in turmoil, rampant with civil unrest, uncertainty and failed leadership.

Inspired by true events and woven into a fictional setting, Fire House pays tribute to the stories of our fallen heroes with particular reference to Daniel Zwane and Michael Letsosa who died while fighting a blaze in the Nedbank building in the CBD in the early hours of the morning on 16 May 2015. The play follows these firefighters who bravely risk it all against all odds.
